LABC (Building Excellence Awards)

Randell Burton win LABC award

LABC Trophy Award 2011

A Listed Cottage

This building was shortlisted for two awards: Best Domestic Extension and Best Technical Development.

The cottage is a very small Grade II Listed Thatched cottage close to a main road with extensive landscaped gardens leading down to the river.

The cottage is outside the flood plain but unfortunately the available garden area was within Flood Zone 3 so conventional extensions would prove problematical.

The brief was to increase the useful floor area of the property to take full advantage of the garden and river while also removing the principle accommodation away from the very busy main road, there have been a number of instances of speeding cars coming to rest within the existing cottage.

The scheme was developed through consultation with the Planning and Conservation team of the Local Authority LABC Awards.

The design developed from the simple principle of turning the disadvantage of the steeply sloping site with in a flood plain in to an advantage that allowed the accommodation to remain above the flood zone and have the full benefit of the garden and the River.

A simple framing system was developed to support the floor plain on a single foundation that did not disturbed the cottage foundations and supported the mono pitched roof over the timber clad walls and large glazed areas affording the extensive views.
